Citizens from member states of the European Union, the European Economic Area, Monaco, Andorra and the Helvetic Confederation do not need a residence permit (law of 26 November 2003).

Unless they already have a tempory residence permit, foreign scientists planning to stay in France for more than 3 months must apply for a residence permit for scientists: the carte de séjour temporaire portant la mention "scientifique".

It must always be carried. Its validity is one year maximum and cannot exceed the validity of the passport. The validity is usually the same as the length of the stay mentioned by the Protocole d’Accueil and can be renewed 2 months before expiry.

The residence permit must be applied for within 2 months after arrival in France, at the Préfecture, guichet Etrangers.

-  The medical check-up

Foreigh visitors who are not citizens of the European Union or the European Economical Space and who plan to stay more than 3 months in France must pass a medical check-up to obtain a residence permit.

When applying for the first time for the residence permit, the visitor must fill in a form to request a medical check-up for himself and the accompanying members of family. The appointment will be notified in writing by the OMI (Office des Migrations Internationales). Depending on the results of this examination, the OMI will deliver a medical certificate necessary for obtaining the residence permit.
